If you've ever walked into a dispensary or browsed hemp products online, you've probably seen an alphabet soup of letters: CBD, THC, CBG, CBC, CBN, THCV, and wondered, What do they all mean?
You're not alone.
Many people think cannabis is simply "THC" or "CBD," but the plant is much more complex than that. In fact, scientists have identified more than 100 naturally occurring cannabinoids, each with its own unique personality and purpose.
Think of cannabinoids like the ingredients in your favorite recipe. Maybe it's a warm pot of soup that's been passed down through generations, or maybe it's as simple as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Every ingredient contributes something different. On its own, each ingredient has value, but together they create something even better.
Cannabinoids work in a similar way.
Rather than relying on just one compound, the cannabis plant offers a variety of natural compounds that often work together to support the body's natural balance. Researchers call this the entourage effect, the idea that cannabinoids, along with other plant compounds like terpenes and flavonoids, may produce broader benefits together than they do individually.
Working in a cannabis dispensary, I hear this all the time:
"Give me the highest THC you have."
Or my personal favorite:
"You don't have anything over 30%?"
Now, if your only goal is to get high as quickly as possible, I understand why THC percentage gets all the attention. But THC is only one piece of the puzzle.
The cannabinoid profile, terpene profile, and overall quality of the flower all play a role in shaping your experience. Sometimes a flower with lower THC and a richer mix of cannabinoids and terpenes can provide a much more enjoyable and well-rounded experience than one with the highest THC percentage on the shelf.
Besides...if chasing the highest THC is the only goal, you might as well skip straight to infused flower. 😉
One of the biggest myths in cannabis is that higher THC automatically means a better experience. That's a bit like saying the hottest hot sauce makes the best meal. If you're like me, sometimes it's true but most of the time, balance creates something far more enjoyable. Sometimes I like to enjoy my food without crying.
You can think of THC as the gas pedal, it's what determines how fast and how intensely you're going to feel the effects.
Terpenes, on the other hand, are the steering wheel. They help determine the direction of your experience and can influence the overall mood.

For example, limonene may take you down an uplifting, happy road. Linalool tends to be more relaxing, while caryophyllene is often associated with easing stress and physical discomfort. Myrcene? Well...myrcene might just park you on the couch for the rest of the evening. Hello, couch lock.
Then there's terpinolene and pinene. Those two will have you out of the car, running a marathon. You'll be convinced it's the perfect time to reorganize your closet, start a new business, and solve all of life's problems before midnight.
Just kidding...kind of. 😂
As you can probably tell, I'm not much of a Jack Herer or Durban Poison girlie. Those strains are known for being uplifting, energizing, and helping people stay focused.
Need to deep clean the house before Saturday's party? No problem. These terpenes might be more helpful than your kids, who somehow forgot how alarms work at 6:00 a.m. on a Saturday.
Growing up, my mama had a different strategy. She'd turn on loud Mexican music first thing in the morning. Suddenly, everyone knew it was cleaning day, you had no choice but to get up but somehow we all found the energy to help. She doesn’t partake in cannabis, she always says she’s “high off life”.
Okay, okay...I'll stop before I start comparing every terpene to a family member. 😄

Your Body Was Designed to Work with Cannabinoids
One of the most fascinating discoveries in modern science is that our bodies already make their own cannabinoids.
These natural compounds are called endocannabinoids, and they're part of an important communication network known as the endocannabinoid system, or ECS.
You can think of the ECS as one of your body's balancing systems. Its job is to help keep everything working in harmony.
The ECS helps regulate many everyday functions, including:
- Mood
- Sleep
- Stress response
- Memory and focus
- Appetite
- Pain perception
- Immune function
- Inflammation
When your body produces endocannabinoids, they fit into specialized receptors much like a key fits into a lock. Plant cannabinoids from cannabis have a similar shape, allowing them to interact with these same receptors.
There are two main receptors you'll hear about.
CB1 Receptors
CB1 receptors are found mostly in the brain and nervous system.
They play an important role in memory, learning, mood, movement, appetite, and how we perceive pain. THC has a strong attraction for these receptors, which is why it produces the well-known "high" associated with cannabis.
CB2 Receptors
CB2 receptors are found primarily throughout the immune system, digestive tract, bones, spleen, and other tissues throughout the body.
These receptors are more closely involved with inflammation, immune health, recovery, and maintaining balance throughout the body. Many non-intoxicating cannabinoids interact with CB2 receptors, making them especially interesting to researchers studying pain, inflammation, and immune function.
Every Cannabinoid Has a Different Job
Not all cannabinoids produce the same effects.
Some may promote relaxation, while others are being studied for focus, appetite, inflammation, metabolism, or sleep. Some are intoxicating, while others have little to no psychoactive effect.
This is why two cannabis products can feel completely different even if they come from the same plant.
Understanding the differences allows you to choose products with more confidence and helps explain why there isn't a one-size-fits-all cannabinoid.
We'll take a closer look at each of the major cannabinoids including THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, CBN, THCA, and THCV, what makes each one unique, what current research says, and how they may fit into a wellness routine.
